Bearings for BOFs and Converters

Split bearings are directly mounted and comprised of two double inner races, two single and one double outer race, with an inner race spacer and two outer race spacers.
Slots in the inner race spacer permit lubricant to flow from the bearing chamber to the roll neck. The inner race spacers are hardened to minimize face wear.

  • Introduction to bearings for converters

  • The converter bearing is a key component for installing the rotating part of the furnace body in the converter equipment. Its main function is to support the weight and inertial force of the furnace body when it rotates, to ensure the smooth rotation of the furnace body, and to reduce wear and energy consumption. The pipe has flanges that connect the two ends of the rotary bearing. There is a round hole in the middle through which flue gas can pass. When selecting converter-bearing materials, requirements such as endurance, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance need to be considered.


  • What are the specific requirements for wear resistance of converter bearings?

  • The wear resistance of converter bearings is mainly reflected in the following aspects:

  • Tribological properties: The tribological properties of bearings directly affect wear resistance, which includes sliding and rolling friction, as well as static and kinetic friction. These characteristics can be improved by selecting polymer materials or surface treatment technology.

  • Surface roughness: Surface roughness is an important factor affecting the wear resistance of bearings. The rougher the surface, the larger the contact area, the greater the friction, and the faster the wear. Therefore, appropriate surface roughness needs to be selected.

  • Hardness: Hardness is another important factor affecting bearing wear resistance. The higher the hardness, the better the wear resistance. However, bearings that are too hard may deform at high temperatures, affecting their performance. Therefore, the appropriate hardness needs to be selected.

  • Lubricants: Proper lubricants can significantly improve the wear resistance of bearings. Lubricant can form an oil film between the bearing and the raceway, reducing the contact area and thereby reducing friction and wear.


  • In actual use, it is necessary to select suitable bearing materials and design structures according to the actual working conditions of the converter (such as temperature, pressure, rotation speed, etc.) and also consider factors such as cost and life.

  • Design characteristics:

  • There are two double cones, two single cups, and one double cup with a cone spacer and two cup spacers.

  • Spacers are designed with slots or holes that allow for lubrication.

  • Cone spacers have been hardened to minimize wear on their faces.

  • They are numbered serially to ensure the correct installation sequence.
