Design Features and Advantages of FV Tapered Roller Bearings

Tapered roller bearings are widely used bearings. According to their structure, they can be divided into: single-row tapered roller bearings, double-row tapered roller bearings and four-row tapered roller bearings. Each type of bearing has various design changes due to its different use requirements and functions. For example, double-row tapered roller bearings can be divided into TDI and TDO due to their different structures; four-row tapered roller bearings can be further divided into sealed four-row tapered roller bearings and unsealed four-row tapered roller bearings, etc. . Single row tapered roller bearings

Single row tapered roller bearing is the most basic tapered roller bearing, which can bear combined loads, that is, radial and axial loads at the same time. The internal geometry is designed to extend bearing life. Featuring a raised raceway profile and optimized inner ring guide flange, it runs cooler than conventional bearings and use less lubricant. The raceways have low friction. The axial load carrying capacity of tapered roller bearings increases with the increase of the contact angle. The size of the contact angle is usually between 10° and 30°, which is related to the calculation coefficient e: the greater the value of e, the greater the contact angle.

1. Low friction

The optimised roller end design and surface finish on the flanges promote the formation of a lubricant film which reduces friction. This also reduces frictional heat and flange wear. At the same time, the bearings can better maintain preload and operate at low noise levels.

The bearing's convex raceway profile and logarithmic raceway profile optimize load distribution along the contact surface, reduce stress peaks at the roller ends, and reduce susceptibility to misalignment and shaft deflection.

The optimized surface finish of the contact surfaces of the rollers and raceways contributes to the formation of a hydrodynamic lubricating film.

4. Low noise and low vibration

The rollers contained in tapered roller bearings are manufactured to very close dimensional and geometric tolerances, and they are virtually identical. Optimum load distribution reduces noise and vibration and enables more accurate setting of preload.

5. Rigid bearing application

Single row tapered roller bearings are usually adjusted for the second tapered roller bearing. Rigid bearing applications can be achieved by applying a preload.

6 Low break-in period for temperature peaks

Tapered roller bearings usually have a break-in period during which traditionally designed tapered roller bearings experience a lot of friction, which can lead to wear. And Luoyang FV tapered roller bearings, as long as the bearing is installed and lubricated correctly, friction, frictional heat and wear will be significantly reduced.

7. Detachable and interchangeable

The inner ring of the bearing assembly can be mounted separately from the outer ring, and these separable assemblies are interchangeable. Such a design facilitates user installation, disassembly, and maintenance inspections. Luoyang FV can produce double row tapered roller bearings in TDO and TDI models, which include many variants and have different functions. Due to their design, these bearings can withstand heavy radial loads, axial loads in both directions and are highly rigid (compared to single row tapered roller bearings). Double row tapered roller bearings are commonly used in gearboxes, lifting equipment, rolling mills and mining machinery, etc.

Double row tapered roller bearings have same features and advantages of single row tapered roller bearings, but due to their different construction, double row tapered roller bearings have additional advantages:

1. Higher carrying capacity

Due to its second row of rollers, double row tapered roller bearings are suitable for larger radial and axial loads. Contact angle size and load capacity are the same as single row tapered roller bearings.

2. Bidirectional axial load

Tapered roller bearings position the shaft in both directions with a specific axial clearance or preload.


Four row tapered roller bearings

Four-row tapered roller bearings can handle combined (radial and axial) loads at low to medium speeds. They are used almost exclusively for work roll applications such as plate rolling mills, slab rolling mills, hot rolling mills, hot strip rolling mills, cold rolling mills, etc. It can be divided into TQO and TQI designs.


TQO: face-to-face arrangement; open or sealed; with cylindrical or tapered bore; with or without inner ring extension on both sides; with or without helical groove in the bore.

TQI: back-to-back arrangement; with cylindrical or tapered bore; with or without inner ring extension on one side.

FV four-row tapered roller bearings are mounted as a complete assembly to carry axial loads in addition to heavy radial loads, so a separate thrust bearing is usually not required in this arrangement. They are typically used in rolling mill applications. In addition, for large size bearings, with perforated rollers and steel pin cages, more rollers can achieve the maximum load rating. For quick roll changes, the bearing fits loose on the roll neck, but the disadvantage is that the inner ring wanders on the bearing seat, causing wear. To reduce these negative effects, FV bearings have a helical groove in the bore and a lubrication groove on the side of the inner ring. These grooves are able to supply lubricant to the contact surfaces of the inner ring and seat. As shown below:

Since wear resistance and impact resistance under heavy rolling load are the requirements of roll neck bearings, FV usually chooses the best case hardened steel material, such as: SAE4320H (G20CrNi2MoA) SAE8620H (G20CrNi4A) SAE 3311 and so on. Different operating speeds and loads will use different raw materials to manufacture bearings.
