Material selection for the rolling element and bearing ring

High-carbon chromium-bearing steel is typically used to make rings and rolling components. Most bearings employ GCr15, and bearing rings with bigger cross sections and rolling elements with greater diameters use GCr15SiMn with good harden-ability. The optimum material for rolling bearings is high-carbon chromium bearing steel since it is an all-around hardened steel that can have both its surface and core hardened.


Some bearings need materials with specific properties because of various circumstances, such as impact resistance, high-temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, and so forth.


The rings and rolling components of large and extra-large bearings that are subject to impact loads are often made of carburize-bearing steel. The surface layer of chromium-molybdenum steel, chromium-nickel-molybdenum steel, or chromium-manganese-molybdenum steel is carburized within the proper depth range of the bearing steel so that it has a dense structure and forms a hardened layer, while the hardness of the central part is low and has good core impact toughness, such as the steel G20CrMo, G20CrNi2Mo, etc. Due to the excellent performance of the carburized-bearing steel, its life calculation is the same as that of high-carbon chromium-bearing steel.

High-temperature bearing steel with good heat resistance is used to make bearings that operate at high temperatures, and paths exposed to corrosive media while operating are made of stainless steel.


It is important to note that vacuum degassing or vacuum remelting steel can satisfy this criterion. The cleaner the bearing steel, the fewer non-metallic impurities, the lower the oxygen concentration, and the longer the bearing fatigue life. Steel that has been electro slag remelted should be used for bearings that require great reliability, such as the steel G20Cr2Ni4A.
